Magical story a treat for children to mark Telford's 50th

Shropshire-born Toni Sian Williams has written and designed The Ironbridge Ogre.

Toni is no stranger to success after illustrating The Wrekin Giant and The Wellington Cobbler back in 2013.

To celebrate the official launch of her latest children's book in November, every primary school in Telford is to receive a limited edition copy of the book as a special gift from Telford & Wrekin Council.

“I wanted to create something special that would reach the hearts of the people of Telford and to celebrate 50 years of Telford," explained Toni.

"There have been lots of fabulous events going on in this past year to celebrate Telford 50.

"But I wanted to create something lasting and magical for young children in Telford, so that they can both celebrate the town they live in and be educated by the local history at the same time.

"In addition I proposed the idea to give £1 per book sale back into charities and community projects around Telford, as a way of giving back to the community and supporting local projects."

Toni's illustrations are created through a range of 3D and digital techniques, meaning her work is very distinctive.

The Ironbridge Ogre features many renowned Shropshire landmarks including Wellington Market, Buildwas Power Station and of course the Iron Bridge.

After spending two years at college studying art & design before going on to university where she studied illustration for a further three years.

She said: “I have absolutely loved creating the book, creating every page took me back to my own childhood growing up in Telford.

"I hope that this story grows with the children of Telford as many other local myths have done. I hope that it brings people together in being proud of where they live and to be inspired by my story.”

The official launch will be held at Southwater Library on November 1. The Mayor of Telford Raj Mehta and council leader Shaun Davies will be attending.
